Thinking of tackling a 5K this summer? Before you put one foot in front of the other, you should prepare your body for the rigors of running.
Patrick Manrique, a physical therapist at ATI Physical Therapy in Chicago’s South Loop, demonstrates several exercises that beginner runners should incorporate into their training. Two of the exercises strengthen glutes, quads, abdominals, hamstrings, and hips in order to prevent injury and improve stability and performance. Three additional exercises focus on agility and foot quickness, two areas often ignored by beginner runners.
