From the loads of candy to the extravagant costumes, Halloween never disappoints. But with all these delectable distractions, it’s important not to ignore the dangers that may shatter the magic of this candy-filled evening. For most Halloween-goers, the goal is to load that goodie bag or bucket to the brim, but when a costume inhibits range of motion or the muscles aren’t calibrated to handle the load, Halloween celebrations can be cut short. Whether it’s shortening a costume that’s too long or spending 15 minutes stretching for the adventure ahead, focusing on a few simple measures will help to alleviate a mid-adventure dilemma. The experts at ATI Physical Therapy, have provided a few tips to help lessen the risk of injury this Halloween.

Wear comfy shoes
Wearing supportive and properly fitting shoes is essential when walking long distances and trekking across uneven ground.
Avoid restrictive costumes
Costumes or accessories that drag on the ground or restrict full range of motion can increase the likelihood of stumbles and falls, so be sure these items are fitted appropriately. Consider wearing the costume once or twice prior to the big night to get the feel for it and better understand any restriction in movements or visibility issues.
Always stretch
Keeping the muscles flexible and strong helps to maintain range of motion in the joints, so be sure to always stretch before any physical activity – consider the following recommended stretches:
- Hamstring stretch
- Calf stretch
- Groin stretch
- Shoulder roll
- Toe touch
- Lateral Flexion Stretch (for those arm swingers)
Stay hydrated
Before, during and even after trick-or-treating, it’s important to stay hydrated to keep the muscles working efficiently and effectively.
Avoid obstructive masks or eyewear
To avoid slips, trips and falls, masks and eyewear need to allow for full vision.
