When I signed up for the ATI Global Reach program in San Pedro Sacatapéquez, Guatemala, I had little knowledge of what to expect. All I knew was that I had the

opportunity to help build a PT clinic in an area with no access to physical therapy and provide treatment to those in need. After the first pre-trip conference prep call, I couldn’t contain my excitement about my upcoming time in Guatemala.

Upon arrival, I knew immediately that this was going to be an unforgettable experience. For the next nine days, I had the opportunity to spend every moment with an amazing group of PTs and PTAs who shared the same love and passion for helping others, especially those in need. The first couple of days we focused on cleaning, painting, planting and renovating a building that was to become the first physical therapy clinic in San Pedro Sacatapéquez. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that everyone working pulled their weight and took pride in the renovation.

After the renovation for the new building was complete, the day came for us to start treating patients. Some of us that spoke Spanish well enough were able to communicate with patients, while others that could barely speak a few sentences, followed our lead. Despite the l

anguage barrier, we were still able to band together and help change these individual’s lives for the better using our true gift, our hands. It was amazing to see patients walking better, feeling better, smiling and thanking us for the time we spent with them whether it be treating or educating. The same feeling was there when we worked with the PT students; together we shared information about our schooling, practiced different techniques and even treated patients.

We are in this profession to provide treatment and care in the most memorable way possible. When the opportunity arises to use our gift to help others, regardless of the country or level of access they have to this type of healthcare, it’s important we make every effort to join a movement as such that inspires change. At ATI, we take pride in what we do and believe everyone deserves good health, “Merecemos Buena Salud”!
