The holidays are in full swing which means stress is either already here or on its way. From the parties to the shopping and everything in between, there are a lot of demands for your time. This can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed and anxious. But that’s not how it should be! It’s the most wonderful time of the year and it should feel that way too!
Here are 6 tips to combat holiday stress throughout the season:
1. Set Realistic Expectations
Our lives and families change which means there may be some new traditions and everything may not be the same as last year. Stay open to change and know that the holidays will still be enjoyable without everything being perfect.
2. Put Differences Aside
While we may not always agree with our families and friends, the holidays are a perfect time to set aside those differences. People are feeling anxious around this time of year and grievances may come out more easily. Try to discuss these grievances at a more appropriate time.
3. Make a Budget and Stick to It
Regardless of the time of year, money always causes stress. Set a budget within your means and don’t create reasons to go over it. We’re always tempted to buy the best and most expensive gifts for the ones we care about, but the dollar amount of a gift isn’t what really matters.
4. Plan Ahead
We can’t plan everything in our lives, but shopping dates and other activities can be scheduled and planned for in advance. This will help to minimize the amount of last minute events that cause us to panic.
5. Say “No”
It’s not always the easiest word to say, especially when we know people need our help, but sometimes it’s the best thing we can do for ourselves. Keep yourself from feeling overwhelmed by not over-booking your schedule. Your friends and family will understand if you can’t be there.
6. Stick with Your Routine
Do you have certain days and times you exercise or do you have a date night every Friday? Keep doing it! Don’t give up the things you enjoy doing just to fit more in for the holidays.
