Sometimes the smallest patients can be the biggest source of inspiration for the clinicians and staff at ATI Physical Therapy.
Meet Nevaeh, a pediatric patient at our hand therapy clinic in Merrillville, IN. Following a surgery that left her hands non-functional and in splints, little Nevaeh just wanted to be able to color, play, and most importantly . . . hold the hands of her family!
Check out today’s “Get There” video to see how Nevaeh, and her therapist Beth, worked hand in hand to reach her goals.
Video Description
When Nevaeh first came to ATI she had post-op bilateral burn releases. She had no function of her hands and was in splints at all times. With the help of Nevaeh’s therapist, Beth, Nevaeh began her physical therapy with wound care, concentrating on motion. Beth was able to get to know the activities and interests that Nevaeh had and incorporate these into her therapy.
Beth introduced fluidotherapy, a device filled with synthetic corn husks. The fluidotherapy feels similar to sand on a beach and is meant to warm up the hands and allow exercise at the same time.
Nevaeh’s grandmother said that a lot of therapists told her they didn't work with pediatrics, but ATI Physical Therapy was open to working with Nevaeh. Beth was active in finding ways to get Nevaeh interested in the physical therapy and make it fun. ATI proved to be most convenient for Nevaeh and her grandmother--it was close to home and therapy sessions were convenient for Nevaeh’s school schedule.
Now able to play with her brothers and sisters, hug her family members and ride a bike, Nevaeh has made great improvements. To learn more about other physical therapy programs that ATI Physical Therapy offers, see our list of physical therapy services.
