As I reflect on my recent service trip to Zacapa, Guatemala, I feel unbelievably blessed to have had the opportunity to volunteer in such amazing communities. I had no idea what to expect when I signed up with ATI Global Reach. I was a bundle of nerves once I found out I’d been selected, but that was soon eclipsed by the excitement to travel and help others.
Once in Zacapa, we traveled to rural, underserved communities to aid those in need. From young to old, they welcomed us with open arms, hearts and minds. They traveled from far and near to be treated. We had limited resources to provide them but what we did have was given to them. We provided those in need with walkers, canes, braces, shoes, elastic bandages and handouts with visuals to perform exercises and stretches. But most importantly, we provided an ear to listen, a smile to greet and some hands-on therapy.
Working side-by-side with other ATI team members that I had never met was a great experience as well. We bonded very quickly and worked together to help others. The local therapists and translators were amazing as well. Their guidance and support for us while in their country was much appreciated.
On this trip, I learned so much about myself, about others and how truly blessed I was to experience such an unforgettable adventure. If given the opportunity again, I would do it in a heartbeat. After this trip, I can see that helping others less fortunate could easily be a way of life for me.
