Prevent Injuries and Grab Some “Radical Air”
Even before the winter games had officially started, there were already a few athletes injured during snowboard training sessions in Sochi. Shaun White even made the decision to pull out of one of his events after a practice run caused him a minor wrist injury. Some may attribute these injuries to the course which has been described as “intimidating” and “intense.” But the truth is, snowboarding in general can be dangerous . . . at least on some level . . . especially when traveling at high speeds.
Fans of winter sports enjoy adventure, because the fun outweighs the risks – for the most part. As long as the proper precautions are taken, injuries can often be prevented.
When a snowboarder falls, they land on their hands, shoulders, rear-end or head. With wrist and head injuries being among the most common outcomes of snowboarding spills, we consulted Lynette Carlson, ATI Sports Medicine Supervisor, for her knowledge on the subject. It just so happens that Lynette, a skier turned snowboarder, has experience with this!
“I learned the hard way. I caught an edge, fell backwards on my wrist and broke it,” shared Lynette.
She didn’t let it deter her from continuing the sport, and she now knows what to do, and what not to do, to decrease the risk of injuries on the slopes.
“If you snowboard, you fall,” says Lynette. “Even really skilled snowboarders fall, but you have to learn how to fall properly.”
If the winter games are inspiring you to hit the slopes, follow some tips from Lynette to stay safe:
DON’T try to brace your fall with your hands.
DO tuck your arms in if you fall.
DON’T challenge yourself to a new hill before you are ready.
DO know your limits and choose the hill that’s right for you, especially to stay in control of your speed.
DON’T think you’re ever skilled enough to forgo protective gear.
DO wear the gear (helmet, wrist guards and knee pads) to protect yourself against bruising, concussion, wrist sprains and fractures.
