Other Conditions We Treat
- Incontinence: More than 17 million Americans suffer from urinary incontinence, yet only 15% seek treatment. Symptoms include loss of urine when coughing, laughing or sneezing, bowel dysfunction and/or pelvic/rectal pain. Physical therapy can help manage, if not alleviate, this often debilitating condition.
- ITB Syndrome: The Iliotibial Band can be irritated with overuse and activity (most commonly with running). This irritation results in pain, inflammation and loss of function known as ITB Syndrome. Rest and physical therapy are the primary remedies.
- Osgood-Schlatter Disease: Often connected to growth spurts, specifically affecting the knee, this condition is typically diagnosed in growing adolescents, especially boys ages 10 to 15. Teenage athletes tend to be more susceptible. To manage pain, there are several things that can be done with the help of a physical therapy treatment plan.
- Rotator Cuff Injury: The rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles in the shoulder, connecting the upper arm to the shoulder blade. The rotator cuff is subject to overuse and tear injuries. Timely intervention can be crucial to achieving a positive outcome.
- TMJ Disorder: The temporomandibular joint, better known as TMJ, is the hinge joint that connects the lower jaw to the temporal bone of the skull. It’s often the culprit for many symptoms, including pain and tenderness in the face, jaw joint area, neck, shoulders and ears during activities like chewing and speaking. Specialty-trained physical therapists use modalities and techniques to relieve and correct the symptoms of TMJ disorders.
- Whiplash: Whiplash is most commonly caused by a motor vehicle accident, but some contact sports, such as football, can lead to whiplash injuries. If left untreated, the condition can linger and turn into a chronic condition that lasts for years, causing pain and sometimes disability. Physical therapy is often beneficial in recovery.
